Year 6
Welcome to the Year 6 Web Page
Summer Term 2026
So, the final term of the final year at Carnarvon – where has that time gone? There is so much still to fit in this term:
During writing lessons, the focus will remain on developing fictional narratives from the perspective of a Londoner living through the Blitz, with an emphasis on “writing to describe so the reader feels empathy”. This will be followed by a shift towards instructional writing, guiding the reader clearly on what to do during an air raid by “writing to instruct so the reader knows what to do”.
Reading sessions will continue to include The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson, a text the class particularly enjoyed last half term, alongside SATs-style comprehension questions and practice. Later in the term, reading lessons will also incorporate a range of non-fiction texts to support learning within the “Living Healthily” topic.
Our maths curriculum is practically complete, though we will be producing some artwork (worthy of a place on the wall!) based on parabolic curves.
There are a number of topics remaining too. ‘Bridges and Engineers’ looks at the structure of bridges with a number of practical lessons involving some construction work and testing of the results.
‘Food for Life’ is a topic centred around healthy eating and will involve children baking bread at school – one loaf to a standard recipe and one incorporating their own ingredients.
‘Our Changing World’ involves time zones, longitude and latitude and the study of maps: grid references, map symbols and contour lines.
PSHE this term is ‘Growing Up’ – essentially the remainder of the Sex Education programme. (We will advise, via the newsletter, when this sequence of lessons will commence.
And believe it or not, we’ll also be fitting in our Y6 residential to Dukes Barn, the school show and a Leavers’ Service!
Well, we better get started…
