Welcome to the Year 6 Web Page
It’s good to be back at school and we’ve got a packed programme on the curriculum this autumn term:
- Our topic is entitled, Is our Planet in Peril? The children will learn about the impact of global warming and climate change on the planet. We also explore the effects climate change is having on the oceans and look at how becoming a disposable society has had a negative effect on our attitude to waste and waste disposal. Later in the term, the children will be learning about rainforests and the part their destruction is contributing to climate change.
- Our English dovetails nicely with our Is our Planet in Peril? topic, with non-chronological reports, letters, poetry and both persuasive and descriptive writing, all conveniently linked to our class reading book: Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.
- Our daily target maths lessons this term will include: place value; mental and written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; fractions, decimals and percentages; position and direction. We will also incorporate arithmetic and problem solving each week and an opportunity for children to practise what they have learnt on Mathletics.
- In science, we are exploring the changing states of matter and will be carrying out investigations linked to evaporation and condensation. After half term, we will be learning about reversible and irreversible changes, as well as undertaking a small study of interdependence and adaptation linked to our topic on the rainforest.
