Welcome to Year 5!
Welcome back! Our main topic for the autumn term is ‘The Shang Dynasty’, a history topic, where the children will be learning all about daily life in Bronze Age China. They will be finding out about ancient religious beliefs, the importance of jade and silk, the social hierarchy, significant people and much more!
In English, we will be studying and creating our own ‘narrative poetry’, ‘biographies’ and ‘stories from other cultures’. We will also be developing our use of punctuation and learning how to apply more complex grammar into our sentence writing. Spellings will be given out weekly and tested the following week.
Maths will follow the White Rose Scheme and this term will cover place value, the four operations and fractions. We will also be doing a weekly arithmetic test every Friday to support children with their arithmetic skills and number fluency.
Within the wider curriculum, we have lots of engaging topics planned. For example, we will be working on a pneumatics project in DT, looking at tints, tones and shading in art as well exploring casting techniques linked to our history topic. We will also be investigating forces and mechanisms, followed by ‘Earth and Space’ in science, learning about Buddhism in RE and improving our hockey and gymnastics skills in PE. We also have lots more planned throughout the term, including our annual Y5 Yule Log decorating competition at Christmas time, which is always great fun!
