Welcome to Year 5!
Our main topic focus for the autumn term is 'Dynamic Dynasties', which focuses on the Shang Dynasty in Bronze Age China. The children will all be learning about the Shang culture, religious beliefs and practices, trade and much more!
In English lessons, we will begin by looking at narrative poetry and then move onto biographies and stories from other cultures. We will also be having regular reading lessons where we will continue to build our vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary skills.
In Maths lessons, we will be continuing to follow the White Rose scheme. Topics to be covered this term include: place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and also fractions. On Fridays we have an arithmetic focused lesson to help improve our calculation strategies.
The first half term in science covers forces and mechanisms, where we will be finding out about gravity, air and water resistance, friction, gears, levers and pulleys. The second half term will be focused on earth and space.
In art, we will learning about taotie motifs and sculptures. In DT, lessons are focusing on pneumatics. Geography lessons will be find out out all about maps, climate and vegetation belts, biomes, transport and much more. PE lessons will be 'hockey skills' for the first half term.
