Welcome to the Year 6 Web Page
Autumn Term 2025
We have settled back into school after the summer break in readiness for the Autumn Term. Our topic for the first half term will be 'Maafa', learning about Britain's role in the Transatlantic slave trade. After the half term break, our Geography topic is 'Frozen Kingdoms', with a strong environmental theme.
In Reading and Writing we will begin Autumn 1 by learning through the book "Wonder" by R.J.Palacio which will support children with the transition to Year 6 as we discuss Auggie's feelings on starting a new school. We will write our own first person narrative as Auggie himself through immersing our selves in relevant and new vocabulary and analysing a model text. We will be learning the skills of using semi-colons and commas to separate a list whilst practising transcription sentences with in-context spellings to further embed these writing skills. Our writing purpose is: to write to explain so the reader gets to know more about and empathises with a character. We will then use this same model for our next piece of writing based around the text "The One and Only Ivan" (Katherine Applegate) where our purpose for writing will be: to write to persuade so the reader wants to change their behaviour. We will be writing from the perspective of a customer at the "Big Top Mall" to the Mall owner Mr Jacobs to change the way he is treating the Silverback gorilla.
During reading lessons we will be exploring "Wonder" through practising our reading fluency in lesson one each week. We will pre-teach vocabulary during lesson two where we read around words for meaning. Lesson three and four are looking at comprehension questions using the reading skills of retrieval, inference, prediction, follow the story (sequencing), effect on reading, compare, reasoning, text types and explanation. We will continue this four lesson structure when reading our second class text of Malamander (Thomas Taylor).
In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of work and have a focus on Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Fractions and Converting Units. In addition, there will be a focus on weekly arithmetic practice and an opportunity to revise topics on Mathletics. To support your child with Maths at home, we have added some helpful workbooks which you can download below.
In Science, we will be learning about our bodies, particularly the Circulatory System and in PSHE, our topic is 'One World'. In RE, we are learning about Judaism and Sikhism. For Art and Design, we will be learning about 'Colour and Style', and also doing a lovely Art topic called 'Inuit', which complements our Frozen Kingdoms topic.
In PE, Year 6 enjoy their weekly lesson with Mr Hall and Mrs Cartwright- the focus this term is Invasion Games, with a focus on Tag Rugby.
