Year 6

Welcome to the Year 6 Web Page

Autumn

We have settled back into school after the summer break in readiness for the Autumn Term. Our topic for the first half-term will be 'Maafa', learning about Britain's role in the Transatlantic slave trade. After the half-term break, our topic is then “Britain at War”, which will continue into Spring 1. Many of our writing units lend themselves to this topic for example, we write to describe so the reader empathises during the London Blitz.

At the start of the year, we begin our English work studying “Wonder” by R.J Palacio, which is a lovely transitional book looking at starting somewhere new. We will then be moving on to writing to complain so the reader changes their behaviour when studying “The One and Only Ivan” whilst reading “Freedom 1787” by Catherine Johnson, which will support our Maafa topic work.

In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of work and have a focus on place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and converting units. In addition, there will be a focus on weekly arithmetic practice and an opportunity to revise topics on Mathletics. To support your child with maths at home, we have added some helpful workbooks which you can download below.

In Science, we will be learning about our bodies, particularly the Circulatory System and in PSHE, our topic is 'One World'. In RE, we are learning about Judaism and Sikhism. For Art and Design, we will be learning about 'Colour and Style', and also doing a lovely Art topic called 'Inuit', which complements our Frozen Kingdoms topic.

In PE, Year 6 enjoy their weekly lesson with Mr Hall - the focus this term is Invasion Games, with a focus on Tag Rugby.
