Welcome to the Year 3 Web Page

Our main History topic is ‘Through the Ages’. We’ll be taking an in-depth and wide-ranging look at British pre-history from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, including changes to people and lifestyle caused by ingenuity, invention and technological advancement.

Autumn’s English learning will see us continue to work on extending our vocabulary, and improving our sentences through the inclusion of more detail and description. We will also be looking at writing narratives, producing instructions, creating our own cinquains and compiling our own chronological reports along the way.

Maths will see us consolidate our understanding about place value, before moving onto addition and subtraction, in which we’ll apply our place value skills, ultimately leading to column calculations. Then, taking us to the end of the Autumn Term, we’ll be learning about multiplication and division.

Our Geography topic is entitled ‘One Planet, Our World’ and we’ll be locating countries and cities, and use grid references, compass points and latitude and longitude. We’ll find out about the layers of the Earth and plate tectonics. We’ll look at the five major climate zones. We’ll also learn about significant places in the United Kingdom and discover how land is used in the locality.

Science will be focused on the importance of nutrition for humans and other animals. We’ll learn about the role of a skeleton and muscles and identify animals with different types of skeleton.

In Art and Design, we’ll be learning about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. There will be an exploration of tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and analogous colours, and how artists use colour in their artwork. We’ll also be learning about Bell Beaker pottery. We’ll have opportunities to explore different clay techniques, before using these to make and decorate a Bell Beaker-style pot.

In Computing, we’ll be learning about the inter-connected digital world we live in and how computers and other digital devices can communicate with one another, and also connect to the wider world, through the internet. We’ll also take an in-depth look at how our school network works. Later on in the term, we’ll be looking at animation and creating our own digital animations using computers.
