Work hard, be kind

Carnarvon Primary School

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

PE is on Thursdays

Welcome to 2024! Our main topic for the spring term is ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’, a geography topic, where the children will be learning all about farming and where food comes from. They will be finding out about seasonal food, life on a farm, allotments, life cycles and much more! In late January, we will be visiting Bingham allotment, as well as a visit to Screveton Eco-Farm after half term, more information on both of these trips will follow.

In English, we will be studying and creating our own ‘persuasive leaflets’, ‘diary entries’ and ‘non-chronological reports’. We will also be developing our use of punctuation and learning how to apply more complex grammar into our sentence writing. Spellings will be given out weekly on a Friday and tested the following Friday.

Maths will follow the White Rose Scheme and this term will cover fractions, multiplication and division, decimals and percentages and perimeter and area. We will also be doing a weekly arithmetic test every Friday to support children with their arithmetic skills and number fluency.

Within the wider curriculum, we have lots of engaging topics planned. For example, we will be working on a seasonal soup project in DT, where the children will get the chance to go on a trip to Toot Hill, to cook a soup in one of their kitchen classrooms. In art, we are looking at line, light and shadow. We will also be investigating human reproduction and ageing in science, learning about Hinduism in RE and improving our gymnastics skills in PE. We have lots of exciting things planned throughout the term, which we are sure the children will thoroughly enjoy!
